Hamstring Strain

Hamstring strains are common injuries that result from one or more muscle tears within the four muscles of the hamstring group. The severity of the injury depends on the degree of muscle trauma and can range from mild to very severe that involves a complete muscle tear.

Typical causes may relate to muscle weakness and coordination, poor running mechanics, lower back problems, improper warm-up, playing surfaces, and previous injury. However, similar symptoms may present due to a lower back injury or otherwise as your sciatic nerve passes through the hamstring group.

For these reasons, a proper assessment by a physiotherapist is recommended. Physicentrix can also help you determine if any biomechanical, dietary, lifestyle, training issue or otherwise may be additional factors to consider in managing your rehabilitation.

General signs and symptoms:

  • Tightness or Muscle Ache
  • Tenderness and Bruising
  • Pain when Walking, Straightening Leg or Bending Over
  • Mild to Severe Pain during Activity (may hear pop or snap)
